Australian Lyrebird in the Blue Mountains National Park (video)

Posted on June 8, 2015November 10, 2018 by Nicky Redl

The Australian Lyrebird has the unique ability to perfectly imitate the songs of other birds as well as human sounds, including mobile phones or camera shutters.

Personally, I think I hear some video game sounds as well.

How many different bird songs can you identify?

I recorded this footage just before sunrise near Jenolan Caves, some two hours inland from Sydney.

While Australian lyrebirds are common in the Blue Mountains, they are shy birds and witnessing them sing is a special and fortunate experience.

Thank you for sharing that. I recently listened to a lyrebird giving a wonderful concert at the Visitors’ Centre at Fitzroy Falls in the Southern Highlands of NSW, Visitors were just walking past this wonderful bird metres from them.. Eventually my curiosity got the better of me and I asked several people why they did not stop and listen and each person said they thought it was a CD playing! We need to train people to Stop, Look and Listen!.
